1. A red sign with 8 sides is used for which purpose?
- A. YIELD signs only
- B. Construction warnings
- C. STOP signs only
- D. Railroad crossing warnings
Show the answer
C. STOP signs only
The red octagon (8 sides) is used only for STOP signs, so you can recognize it even from behind or when covered by snow.
2. A police car with flashing lights is stopped on the shoulder, but heavy traffic makes changing lanes unsafe. What does the Move Over law require?
- A. Slow to a safe speed below the posted limit and be ready to stop
- B. Stop in your lane until the police car leaves
- C. Change lanes anyway, since the law requires it
- D. Keep the posted speed limit and stay in your lane
Show the answer
A. Slow to a safe speed below the posted limit and be ready to stop
If you cannot move over safely or legally, you must slow to a reasonable speed below the posted limit and be prepared to stop if needed.
3. What is the correct way to wear a lap and shoulder belt?
- A. Lap belt across the stomach, shoulder belt behind your back
- B. Lap belt loose for comfort, shoulder belt across the neck
- C. Lap belt only, with the shoulder belt under your arm
- D. Lap belt low across the hips, shoulder belt over the collarbone and away from the neck
Show the answer
D. Lap belt low across the hips, shoulder belt over the collarbone and away from the neck
Wear the lap belt under the abdomen and low across the hips. The shoulder belt should cross the collarbone and breastbone, away from your neck.
4. A deer suddenly darts onto the road ahead. Why does the manual warn against swerving to avoid animals?
- A. Swerving is illegal in New Jersey
- B. Animals always move out of the way on their own
- C. Swerving may cause you to hit something else or be hit from behind
- D. Swerving will damage your tires
Show the answer
C. Swerving may cause you to hit something else or be hit from behind
Trying to avoid animals often causes crashes, because swerving can send you into another object or vehicle. The best defense is watching both sides of the road ahead and being ready for sudden moves.
5. You cannot avoid a crash. Your only choices are a car coming straight at you or a parked car. Which should you choose to hit?
- A. Neither; brake hard and hold the wheel straight
- B. Either one; the damage will be the same
- C. The oncoming car, since it may swerve
- D. The parked car
Show the answer
D. The parked car
If a crash cannot be avoided, hit something that is not moving rather than something coming straight at you. Try to never hit anything head-on.
6. Where must a GDL driver under 21 place the red reflective decals?
- A. On the bottom right corner of the rear license plate only
- B. On the top left corner of the front and rear license plates
- C. On the driver's side door and the rear bumper
- D. On the inside of the rear window and the windshield
Show the answer
B. On the top left corner of the front and rear license plates
Two red reflective decals must be shown: one on the top left corner of the front plate and one on the top left corner of the rear plate.
