How we make these questions

Every question on PracticeTestHQ is written from an official source: the state's own driver handbook. Nobody can legally offer the real test questions, and anyone who says they do is guessing. What we can do is teach exactly what the real test is built from, and show you where each answer comes from.

1. We start from the official handbook

We download each state's current handbook from the state's own website, record its edition and a fingerprint of the file, and check weekly for a newer edition. See every document we use on our sources page.

2. Questions are drafted with AI, from the handbook pages only

Questions are drafted with the help of an AI model that is given the handbook pages for one topic and strict rules: only that state's rules, our own wording, plain language, four options, one right answer, and an explanation for every option. Each question records the handbook page and a short quote that supports it.

3. Code checks every question

  • The quote must really be on the cited page.
  • Every number in the correct answer (distances, fines, ages, limits) must appear on that page.
  • No run of more than 15 words may be copied from the handbook.
  • No near-duplicates, and no two questions may state different values for the same rule.

4. An independent reviewer answers without the key

A separate review session, which never saw how a question was written, answers it using only the cited handbook page, then judges whether the page supports the answer and whether any other option could also be right. A question is published only if the reviewer picks the same answer and finds nothing ambiguous. Questions with reviewer concerns are rewritten or removed by an editor.

5. You can report problems

Every question has a “Report a problem” link. We check each report against the handbook, and fixes are listed in our corrections log. When a state publishes a new handbook, questions citing changed pages are taken down until they're rechecked.

What we don't do

  • We don't claim our questions are the “real” test questions.
  • We aren't affiliated with, or approved by, any DMV or government agency.
  • We don't show made-up pass rates, reviews or “people online now” counters.
