Sample parking questions

  1. 1. In Massachusetts, how close to an intersection may you park?

    • A. No closer than 20 feet
    • B. No closer than 10 feet
    • C. No closer than 30 feet
    • D. No closer than 50 feet
    Show the answer

    A. No closer than 20 feet

You may not park within 20 feet of an intersection. Cars parked closer block the view of drivers and pedestrians.

  2. 2. You park facing downhill next to a curb. Which way should you turn your front wheels?

    • A. It does not matter if the parking brake is set
    • B. Toward the travel lane
    • C. Toward the curb
    • D. Straight ahead
    Show the answer

    C. Toward the curb

When parking downhill against a curb, turn your wheels inward, toward the curb. If the brake fails, the curb stops the car from rolling into the street.

  3. 3. You have a valid disability placard. The HP-DV space is taken, but the striped crosshatch area next to it is empty. May you park there?

    • A. No, not even with a placard
    • B. Yes, but only for 15 minutes
    • C. Yes, because you have a placard
    • D. Yes, if you leave your hazard lights on
    Show the answer

    A. No, not even with a placard

The crosshatched stripes beside an HP-DV space must stay clear, and a disability placard or plate does not change that. The space lets people get in and out of their vehicles.

  4. 4. When you stop or park on a roadway, how wide a clear lane must you leave for other traffic to get by?

    • C. At least 10 feet
    • D. At least 20 feet
    Show the answer

    B. At least 12 feet

Whenever you park or stop, leave a clear roadway at least 12 feet wide so other traffic can pass.
