Rules to remember10 key sharing the road rulesShow the rules
- A fully loaded tractor-trailer may need more than 400 feet on dry pavement to stop, longer than a football field. (p. 35)
- A truck's no-zones reach up to 20 feet in front of the cab, along both sides, and up to 200 feet behind it. (p. 35)
- Always pass a tractor-trailer completely and on the left side; lingering beside it blocks the trucker's escape route. (p. 36)
- Leave three or four seconds when following a motorcycle so the rider has time to react or stop. (p. 37)
- Most crashes between a vehicle and a bicyclist occur at intersections, so scan for bicyclists there. (p. 37)
- When passing a bicyclist, you must leave at least three feet between your vehicle and the bicycle. (p. 37)
- To operate a motorized bicycle you must be at least 14 and carry a valid license or permit. (p. 42)
- Bicyclists may ride no more than two abreast, though single file is safest. (p. 42)
- Riders under 18 must wear an approved safety helmet on a motorized bicycle; wearing one at any age is a good practice. (p. 42)
- At night, bicycles need a headlight visible from 500 feet and a red rear reflector. (p. 42)
